thing heard in a chiropractic office

Here’s part three to our series of blogs. I hope you’re enjoying it and are finding it somewhat insightful.

We’ll pick back up with the comments that we commonly here at number eleven and go through fifteen.

“That’s the first time I’ve stood up straight in years.”

We have heard this one from a few gentlemen that were “seasoned.” Meaning they were a little bit on the older side. They had degenerated discs and had had them for years. After undergoing Spinal Decompression in our office, they felt immediate reduction of pain. One actually said that it was the first time in TEN YEARS that he was able to stand up straight. I just don’t know what took him so long to come see us in the first place. Even though it gets frustrating that these folks just haven’t been told somewhere along their lives how beneficial chiropractic is, it’s still incredibly gratifying to see these folks get better after so many years of difficulty.

“I don’t know what I did to start it.”

It’s a common misconception that you need to have a trigger to start a problem. I would tell you that life, in general, causes our problems. A car wreck when you were in your teens. Stepping off of a step wrong two weeks ago. Sitting with your legs crossed all of the time or carrying a wallet in your back pocket most of your life. It’s important to realize that we have a pain threshold. That threshold is the point where we finally feel the pain from something that is bothering us. But, we have little issues all day, every day that are just underneath that pain threshold and many times, it takes very little to turn the little things underneath into something that hits the pain threshold and becomes a regular complaint.

“I saw a chiropractor years ago. One visit and I was great.”

This is RARE! Not only is it rare, but every person is different. Not only is every person different, but every condition or complaint a person develops is different. Going even further, as a person ages, they heal differently. To correlate one experience several years ago into current expectations for treatment is somewhat unfair and certainly unrealistic. It usually takes work, consistency, and commitment to see the results people would like to see.

“Can you prescribe me something?”

The question isn’t whether we can. The question is whether we want to prescribe. Currently, only chiropractors in New Mexico can go on to get extra certification and then prescribe certain medications. Some states are looking at legislature allowing the same. However, for the vast majority of chiropractors, prescribing medication is not something they desire to do. Most became chiropractors to allow recovery in a natural way, free of medication.

“How long did you have to go to school to be a chiropractor?”

We get this question quite a bit. It’s funny but most people honestly do not know what chiropractors go through to become a Doctor of Chiropractic and licensed to treat patients in that capacity. Chiropractors take 25-35 hours per semester which is about double what a regular full time college student takes. It’s your job basically. We take around 4,500 hours of college and internship. Chiropractic schools have Basic Science courses that are identical to those of Medical School. Classes like Physiology, Pathology, Radiology, Bone Pathology, Neurology, Gross Anatomy, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Histology, etc… All together, it takes approximately 8 years to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.

We’ll be back next week with the last installment of this blog series.
