A Surging Solution For Whiplash Injuries

Why They Did It

The goal of the paper was to basically pit chiropractic manipulative therapy against physiotherapy for the treatment of whiplash injuries. Which would be more effective?

How They Did It

  • This paper was a randomized controlled trial.
  • 380 volunteers were accepted into the study.
  • 300 of them were males, while 80 were female.
  • All patients had been diagnosed with whiplash injuries less than 3 months old.
  • The Whiplash gradings were in the Grade II to Grade III range using the Quebec Task Force grading system.
  • The patients were divided randomly into 2 groups. Group A was the experimental group while Group B was the control group.
  • Group A underwent a manipulative (chiropractic) regimen with weekly adjustments and included soft tissue manipulation and mobilization.
  • Group B underwent traditional physiotherapy/physical therapy protocols daily which included active exercise, electrotherapy, ultrasound, and diathermy.
  • The Outcome Assessments were performed via the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the cervical range of motion, and amount of treatment required to finish the protocol.
  • The data was run at the beginning, after each 4th session for the first group and after every 10th session in the second (control) group.

What They Found

  • In the chiropractic group, the patients needed an average of 9 visits to complete treatment.
  • In the physiotherapy group, the patients needed an average of 23 sessions.
  • The chiropractic group had much more improvement than did the physiotherapy group in the Outcome Assessments, particularly after the first 4 sessions.

Wrap It Up

“Patients who had received manipulative treatment needed fewer sessions to complete the treatment than patients who had received physiotherapy treatment. The improvement in the manipulative group was achieved with fewer treatment sessions and was greater than the improvement in physiotherapy group.“

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!
Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising the general, overall level of health!
