Acute And Chronic Pain: Chiropractic Treatment With One-Year MRI Follow-Up

Wednesday, November 11th, 2015

Continuing with our research-based blogs, I want to draw your attention to a brand new abstract that came to my attention just last week thanks to the Texas Chiropractic Association.

The reason for this research was to evaluate patients with lower back pain with leg pain that were due to a disc herniation. The disc herniation had to be confirmed by MRI as well.

The patients were treated with common spinal manipulation just as you would expect from the majority of chiropractors. Quick, gentle adjustments. NOT instrument aided adjustments such as Pro Adjuster or Activator.

The goal was to determine the effectiveness through research-validated Outcome Assessment questionnaires that are commonly used throughout the healthcare field (i.e., Revised Oswestry, Numerical Rating Scale, etc.). These were performed up to 1 year following the initial onset of treatment.

Here’s how it went:

  • 148 patients 18-65 years of age.
  • All having low back pain and leg pain as a result of MRI-confirmed and orthopedic exam-confirmed disc herniation
  • All initial Assessments were performed
  • All treatments were performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic
  • All Assessments were again performed at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after the first treatment.

Results:
“Significant improvement for all outcomes at all time points was reported.

  • At 3 months – 90.5% were “improved.”
  • At 1 year – 88.0% were “improved.”

Acute patients improved quicker but in terms of chronic patients:

  • At 3 months – 81.8% reported “improved.”
  • At 1 year – 89.2% reported “improvement.”

No adverse events in regards to treatment were reported.

CONCLUSIONS:
“A large percentage of acute and importantly chronic lumbar disc herniation patients treated with chiropractic spinal manipulation reported clinically relevant improvement.”

ONCE AGAIN – I am pleading the case and I have the research and proof of effectiveness on my side. PILES OF EVIDENCE AT THIS POINT. The folks that continually persist in being detractors of this profession do not have the information against. They only have opinion and hearsay.

We will continue to hammer it home. I can only ask that you will share these blogs and help me get the news to those that need it the most.

When you consider that we chiropractors only see about 8-10% of the population, there are so many people out there that are misinformed and hurting as a result. We can’t help everyone in all conditions. But, of the patients that are what I would term “chiropractic patients,” we can help as much as 80%-90% in my estimation. My experience has shown it to be THAT powerful.

Till next time……
