The Perfect Pillow Doesn't Exist So Stop Spending Your Money

Stop stressing about finding the perfect pillow

 

We get questions all of the time about pillows. It seems the question of exactly which pillow is the best pillow to use is at the top of mind for lots of our patients, especially the ones with neck pain.

Those having chronic neck issues can get desperate for answers. If for no other reason than to just keep their pain from getting any worse.
It’s not uncommon for these patients to spend $100s of dollars trying pillow after pillow. 
Some TV channels are inundated with commercials about getting the perfect pillow a thus finally obtaining that ever elusive, perfect night sleep.
But what’s the truth about the best pillow to use for a good night sleep and less pain?
First, let’s get specific. Latex pillows made no difference in any research outcomes. The polyester pillow significantly increased side flexion range of movement on waking and showed some effect on nocturnal-waking cervical pain. There was also some support for the memory foam pillows in the research as well.
 
HOWEVER, overall no pillow SIGNIFICANTLY altered any outcome measure.
 
Another research project by Jia-Xing Lei et al. in 2021 concluded “The suggested range for achieving optimal cervical spine alignment, appropriate pressure distribution, and minimal muscle activity during sleep cannot yet be identified considering the lack of sufficient evidence. Moreover, there remain no firm conclusions about the optimal pillow height for the supine and lateral positions.”
 
When it comes down to it, many truly, unbiased experts with no financial gain at stake will typically recommend the following; YOU NEED A PILLOW THAT KEEPS YOUR NECK STRAIGHT. That means only one pillow. NOT two pillows. That means relatively thin pillows. Not thick, fat pillows.
 
If it’s memory foam but doesn’t keep your neck straight when laying on your side or on your back, it’s a waste of your money. It comes down to how you use the pillows. And if you can use it in a way that keeps you neck straight, it’s probably the right pillow to use.
 
So, stop stressing and blowing money searching for the perfect pillow. Just relax and get the pillow that keeps you straight on your back as well as on your side.
