Chiropractic Management of Low Back Pain and Back-Related Leg Pain

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014

What was the purpose?

Assess literature regarding the use of spinal manipulation in low back pain.

How did they do it?

A search was done of available research from databases that included PubMed, Mantis, and the Cochrane Database. In addition, there was an invitation to healthcare professionals through association media to submit relevant articles for inclusion.

What did they find?

887 source documents were found. These were filtered into categorized groups:

  • Randomized controlled trials (RCT)
  • Randomized trials of other interventions for low back pain
  • Guidelines
  • Systematic reviews
  • Basic Science
  • Diagnostic-related articles
  • Methodology
  • Cognitive therapy and psychosocial issues
  • Cohort and outcome studies

What did they decide?

“As much or more evidence exists for the use of spinal manipulation to reduce symptoms and improve function in patients with chronic low back pain as for use in acute and subacute low back pain. Also, use of exercise in addition to manipulation will probably speed the case along and lead to even better outcomes while reducing instances of exacerbation of the condition.

The study was by Lawrence, DJ, et. al. that appeared in J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 2008 Nov-Dec;31(9):659-74.

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic . Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!
