How Research May Change How We All View Low Back Disc Treatment

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016

At this point in research, it is basic common knowledge, even among chiropractic detractors, that chiropractic manipulation is significantly effective for low back pain.

However, not as much evidence exists in regards to manipulative treatment for complaints originating from a lumbar disc herniation. We chiropractors see the effectiveness daily, but backing research is always very satisfying.

Why They Did It

The authors in this paper were curious as to the safety and effectiveness of mobilization/manipulation of a lumbar disc herniation.

How They Did It

  • The authors extracted the pertinent information from commonly used research databases such as PubMed, OVID, Cochrane Library, CBM, CNKI, and VIP.
  • 832 papers on the topic (lumbar disc herniations) were extracted for the study.
  • 8 of the papers actually met the criteria for the study and were subsequently used.
  • There were 911 low back disc herniation patients within the qualifying 8 articles.
  • The data was processed using the Cochrane systematic review process.

What They Found

The cure rate for those undergoing chiropractic manipulative treatment was greater than with other treatment methods, which included acupuncture, traction, thermotherapy, etc.

Wrap It Up

“This study shows that manipulative treatment on lumbar disc herniation is safe, effective, and both cure rate and the effective rate is better than other therapies.” However, the authors also admit that higher quality evidence needs to be collected for a higher level of validation.

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising the general, overall level of health! Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!! We cannot make a difference without your help.
