How Safe Is A Chiropractic Adjustment?

Chiropractic in Amarillo is safe and effective

Unfortunately, there is more than enough misinformation in the world about the safety of chiropractic adjustments. Any chiropractor you speak with will have plenty of stories to tell where a provider in the medical field told them that chiropractors will hurt or even kill them.

It’s always disappointing to hear this sort of talk. I had a patient share with me just last week that she expressed her plan to take her dad to see me. Her dad’s doctor was very adamant and even a bit scolding when he said, “They will kill you. They will absolutely kill your dad.”

Let’s be fair here. I truly believe this opinion came from a place of caring for their patient. However, it also came from a profound ignorance of what chiropractors do and how they do it, using different techniques and different protocols used in the profession. This ignorance originates from either anti-chiropractic dogma that has been passed down or from the simple laziness required to avoid education about other forms of treatment for neuromusculoskeletal conditions outside of medications.

Here is a paper having to do with assessing damage from spinal manipulation.

Why They Did It

The authors wanted to assess whether there is damage as a result of spinal manipulation and attempt to understand the overall safety of the procedure.

How They Did It

  • 30 subjects were accepted for the study.
  • They were separated into different study groups:
    1. Placebo
    2. Single lower neck manipulation
    3. Thoracic (mid-back) manipulation
  • Blood samples were collected prior to the procedure as well as immediately afterward and 2 hours post-procedure.
  • The samples were tested for several common “tissue damage” markers such as troponin and creatine phosphokinase to mention a couple.

What They Found

There were no significant markers found as a result of the chiropractic adjustments.

Wrap It Up

“Our data suggest that the mechanical strain produced by SM seems to be innocuous to the joints and surrounding tissues in healthy subjects.”

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising the general, overall level of health! Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!! We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
