NEW RESEARCH: Isn’t Going To The Chiropractor Risky?

Thursday, April 30th, 2015
Although the plight of the chiropractor has improved over the last 5-10 years, it is still not all that rare to hear things like, “I wouldn’t go to a chiropractor. They twist your head off.” Or something along the lines of, “My family doctor told me to never go to a chiropractor. They’ll hurt you.”

As you may imagine, as a chiropractor, I hear this sort of talk and much worse on almost a weekly basis. It can be discouraging if allowed but, I find comfort in knowing that I know more than the folks that say these things. Somehow, that just makes me feel better.

Continuing with this discussion, I felt it appropriate to include here a research abstract from THIS year. In fact, the publication date was February 15, 2015 in Spine journal. Now, Spine journal sounds a bit like a chiropractic publication but it is not. It is for neurologist, orthopedic surgeons, and everyone else concerned with issues of the spine.

Check this out:

WHY THEY DID IT

The researchers felt that there was inadequate study into the risk of physical injury from spinal manipulation in older folks (a population at increased risk of any sort of injury) following visits to a Doctor of Chiropractic vs. a visit to their primary care physician.

HOW THEY DID IT

  • Medicare data was analyzed on patients aged 66-99
  • All patients had a visit in 2007 for a neuromusculoskeletal complaint.
  • Using standardized testing, the patients were evaluated within 7 days.
  • They compared those treated by a Doctor of Chiropractic against those evaluated by a primary care physician.

WHAT THEY FOUND

  • The risk for injury in the Chiropractic group was lower than that of the primary care group.
  • The cumulative probability of injury in the primary care physician group was 153 per 100,000 subjects.
  • The cumulative probability of injury in the chiropractic group was 40 injuries per 100,000 subjects.

WRAP UP

“Among Medicare beneficiaries aged 66-99 with an office visit risk for a neuromusculoskeletal problem, risk of injury to the head, neck, or trunk within 7 days was 76% lower among subjects with a chiropractic office visit than among those who saw a primary care physician.”

Whedon JM, Mackenzie TA, Phillips RB, Lurie JD. Risk of traumatic injury associated with chiropractic spinal manipulation in Medicare Part B beneficiaries aged 66 to 99 years. Spine (Phila Pa 1976). 2015 Feb 15;40(4):264-270

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

We have seen time and time again the amazing effectiveness of chiropractic for issues such as neck out of alignment, hips out of alignment, back alignment, lower back alignment hip out of alignment, back out of alignment, etc… We have just about seen it all.

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!!   We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
