New Startling Link: Prenatal Acetaminophen & ADHD

Friday, November 3rd, 2017

I can tell you a hundred stories about how effective Chiropractic can be for prenatal pain. I can (and have) posted several blogs here based on research proving the effectiveness of Chiropractic care for prenatal back pain. Today’s blog is a little different, though. Today, we talk about risks mothers-to-be may be putting their newborns at through the use of acetaminophen in an attempt to get out of pain.

It has been clinically proven and researched: Chiropractic care is absolutely effective for the treatment of back pain for prenatal patients. There is NO NEED to take any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, in most cases.

Why They Did It

The researchers in this study were looking to quantify any association between the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and cases of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in their children.

How They Did It

  • The diagnoses of ADHD were collected from the Norwegian Patient Registry.
  • The registry included 112,973 children.
  • 2246 of the children had ADHD.
  • The results were adjusted for familial risk for ADHD.

What They Found

  • There was a MODEST association in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.
  • The hazard ratio for use more than 29 days was 2.20.
  • Use for fever and infection for 22-28 days was associated with ADHD.

Wrap It Up

“Long-term maternal use of acetaminophen during pregnancy was substantially associated with ADHD even after adjusting for indications of use, familial risk of ADHD, and other potential confounders.”

Basically, don’t take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) while you’re pregnant!!

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!
Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising the general, overall level of health!

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!! We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
