Why They Did It

A very common complaint in pregnancy is low back pain. No question about it. The authors of this paper wanted to test this theory: is a multimodal approach to treating the pregnancy-induced low back pain more effective than standard and usual OBGYN care?

How They Did It

  • This study was a prospective, randomized trial.
  • 169 subjects were accepted for inclusion.
  • A baseline assessment was performed on the patients at the 24-28 week gestation period.
  • The assessment was followed up with another assessment at the 33 week mark.
  • The Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) was used to assess pain for each patient.
  • The Quebec Disability Rating (QRS) was used as well for pain assessment.
  • Each of the 2 groups received routine OBGYN care.
  • In one of the groups however, chiropractors treated the women with manual therapy, stabilization exercises, and patient education.

What They Found

  • In the group that Chiropractic was utilized in, they found a significant reduction in the pain being reported by the patients from baseline to finish.
  • The regular OBGYN group had no significant improvement.

Wrap It Up

“A multimodal approach to low back and pelvic pain in mid pregnancy benefits patients more than standard obstetric care.”

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising the general, overall level of health!
