Remarkable Results When Combining Treatments

Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

This week’s blog will be a discussion about an article I saw posted online last week. The link to the article will be below in the reference section.

If chiropractors have been paying attention, they already know that, while the healthcare system in Canada is not superior to their counterpart in America overall, they ARE ahead of us in regards to integrative care and integrating complementary and alternative protocols such as Chiropractic care.

In Canada, they have a pilot project with the goal of reducing the use of opioids. America is just now starting to pay some real attention to the problem.

As we know, America is in the grips of an opioid epidemic that has reached the level of a national emergency.

Canada is starting to see a decrease in the use of opioids and they are accomplishing this decrease in opioid use through Chiropractic care integration. In fact, the group that ran the project was recently recognized with an award through the Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario.

The team that ran the project was from Belleville and was a nurse practitioners-led clinic.

The health ministry in Ontario funds a program called Primary Care Low Back Pain Pilot Project. The project has been instrumental in exploring the integration of different healthcare workers (chiropractors, physiotherapists, and kinesiologists) into one functioning team with the goal of treating low back pain patients effectively and removing them from an opioid medication.

From what I can tell from this article, this pilot project is only one project out of seven that are currently ongoing in Ontario. Again, all of these projects have the goals of testing the effectiveness of healthcare worker integration and of getting more and more patients away from opioid use.

If the information from all seven of the projects is combined, the results are quite astounding. See below:

  • 83% of patients had less pain medication post-treatment.
  • 93% of the patients treated reported that they had an improved quality of life since they were no longer in pain.
  • The staff running the projects reported 51% less disability from the initial exam to the re-exam.

One of the oft-quoted people in the article is chiropractor Dr. Bruce Flynn. In one part of the article, Dr. Flynn is quoted as saying, “It’s the integration and working together of all the health team that’s creating these great results. I expected good results. I didn’t expect someone to quit opioids cold turkey.”

Now as chiropractors that have been in practice for any real amount of time understand and know, these results are expected. We know these results. We’ve seen them over and over. I can say with great satisfaction however, that it is wonderful to see the medical institutions of the world beginning to see and validate the value we bring to the overall healthcare spectrum.

One of the more surprising findings that I got from the article was that they reported there were reduced instances of diagnostic imaging as well as reduced emergency room visits for low back pain. That is simply outstanding. If you believe healthcare costs are out of control, it makes sense to start looking at Chiropractic as an aid in reducing those costs.

One of the patients that was treated in the Belleville project was quoted as saying that she was taking six Percocet every single day in addition to six Tylenol No. 3 tablets. She then went on to feel so much better (after Chiropractic treatment) that now she has been able to completely get off of the Percocet and the Tylenol No. 3 and has no pain whatsoever. How incredible is that, especially when you consider the devastating effects that anti-inflammatories and pain medication can have on your body long-term. Can you even begin to calculate what a difference Chiropractic care has made in her life? I’m not sure that anyone can.

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!
Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising the general, overall level of health!

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!! We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
