Research – Can Chiropractic Adjustments Help Low Back Pain Due To Disc Herniation?

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014

This was just in the March-April 2014 Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics.

The objective was to test patients that had pain in their low backs with leg pain as a result of a disc herniation. The disc herniation had to have been confirmed through an MRI. Then, after qualifying the patient, they were treated with chiropractic adjustments and then followed for long-term, medium, and short terms to track their progress.

How it was done:

  • 148 patients between the ages of 18 and 65.
  • Low back pain due to a disc herniation
  • Leg pain due to a disc herniation
  • Adjustment by a chiropractor
  • The pain and follow-up pain was rated on the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS)
  • Outcome Assessment Questionnaires were used at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.

What the researchers found:
Significant improvement for all outcomes at all time points was reported.

  • At 3 months, 90.5% of patients were “improved”
  • At 1 year, 88% were “improved”
  • Even chronic patients reported 81.8% improved at 3 months
  • Chronic patients also reported 89.2% improved at 1 year.

No adverse events were reported.

The researches concluded that a large percentage of acute and chronic low back and leg pain due to disc herniation patients treated with chiropractic adjustments reported clinically significant improvement over the course of
2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.

Just another reason to call your local chiropractor and make an appointment.

Research and clinical experience show that In about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, (in comparison to the traditional medical model), patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic . Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and Non-surgically. And we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient.

And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!
