Research: Chiropractic vs. Amitriptyline for Migraines Grudge Match.

Friday, August 14th, 2015

It has been my experience that most people will identify chiropractors with back and neck pain but not necessarily headaches or migraines. FOR MANY HEADACHES AND MIGRAINES, ONCE AN EMERGENCY IS RULED OUT, MAY TIMES DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC SHOULD BE THE ENTRY POINT INTO THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN THESE COMPLAINTS.Here’s research for it.

WHY THEY DID IT
They estimate that around 11 million Americans have moderate to severe disability from migraines. The authors wanted to do what they could to get a closer reading as to what effectiveness spinal manipulation has on migraine headaches.

HOW THEY DID IT

  • 218 Randomized patients pre-diagnosed with migraines
  • Measure efficacy of spinal manipulation
  • Measured efficacy of amitriptyline
  • Measured efficacy of treatment that combines both manipulation AND amitriptyline

WHAT THEY FOUND

  • Clinically important improvement observed with the patients undergoing spinal manipulation alone (40%)
  • Improvement under amitriptyline (49%)
  • Improvement in the group undergoing both treatments. (41%)
  • BUT……upon post-treatment evaluation, A FAR HIGHER AMOUNT OF MIGRAINE PATIENTS THAT UNDERWENT SPINAL MANIPULATION ALONE HAD REDUCTION ON THEIR HEADACHE DISABILITY INDEX SCORES THAN IN THE OTHER TWO GROUPS.

WRAP UP
Since the study proved that Chiropractic was equal in effectiveness to a an established medical treatment (amitriptyline), then Chiropractic should be considered the reasonable option in complaints such as these.

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY

The information fro this blog was inspired and obtained from an article in Dynamic Chiropractic, Vol .33, #10 called Chiropractic Manipulation and Migraine Headaches. Here is the link to the article.

It’s research citation was as follows:

Nelson CF, Bronfort G, Evans R, et al. The efficacy of spinal manipulation, amitriptyline and the combination of both therapies for prophylaxis of migraine headache. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Oct. 1998;21(8), pp511-19.

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

We have seen time and time again the amazing effectiveness of chiropractic for issues such as neck out of alignment, hips out of alignment, back alignment, lower back alignment hip out of alignment, back out of alignment, etc… We have just about seen it all.

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!!   We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
