Chronic neck pain and rehab exercises

We see lots of research regarding the positive effects of spinal manipulation for low back pain. Acute AND Chronic low back pain to be specific. This one however spotlights the benefits of spinal manipulation in CHRONIC NECK PAIN. Not only the benefits of spinal manipulation but the addition of rehab exercises as part of the treatment regimen.

WHY THEY DID IT

The authors wanted to contrast the effectiveness of spinal manipulation when combined with low-tech rehab, MedX rehab, or spinal manipulation alone over the course of 2 years. Of the research available, the authors did not feel that there was adequate research outside of short-term follow-ups.

HOW DID THEY DO IT?

  • 191 patients with chronic neck pain
  • Patients were randomized to 11 weeks in one of the three treatment protocols.
  • The patients self-reported on questionnaires measuring pain, disability, general health status, improvement, satisfaction, and medication use.
  • The questionnaires were collected after 5 and 11 weeks of treatment
  • They were also collected after 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment concluded

WHAT DID THEY FIND?

  • 93% of the patients finished the 11 weeks of treatment.
  • 76% provided the required information at all points of treatment and follow-up.
  • There was a difference in the patient-rated pain in favor of the two exercise groups
  • There was a difference in satisfaction with care when spinal manipulation was combined with rehab exercises.

WRAP UP

There was a clear advantage of spinal manipulation combined with exercise vs. spinal manipulation alone over two years. The researchers concluded that chronic neck pain patients should enter treatment protocols including rehab exercises along with spinal manipulation for optimal results.

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

We have seen time and time again the amazing effectiveness of chiropractic for issues such as neck out of alignment, hips out of alignment, back alignment, lower back alignment hip out of alignment, back out of alignment, etc… We have just about seen it all.

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!! We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
