Research: Cold Laser and TMJ. What’s the Research Say?

Thursday, June 25th, 2015
More and more health practitioners are beginning to recognize the benefits of cold laser or low level laser (LLL). More and more research continues to validate the trend and in response, we are seeing increased utilization across the board.

Here is a short research paper having to do with the efficacy of LLL on temporomandibular disorders (TMJ) (TMD).

Why They Did It

Considering it’s “newness” as a healthcare treatment option, LLL still needs more and more research to validate its usefulness and efficacy across a wide spectrum of conditions and complaints. This study was to confirm the efficacy of red and infrared laser therapy for TMJ disorders.

How They Did It

  • Most importantly, the trial was a DOUBLE-BLIND, RANDOMIZED, parallel clinical trial.
  • Each TMJ joint of 19 subjects was randomized in a total of 116 points
  • Pain was measured at 24 hours, 30 days, 90 days, and 180 days after treatment
  • There were 3 sessions of treatment

What They Found

  • Both the red and the infrared LLL had significant results.
  • There was a difference between the two treatments at 180 days with the infrared being the more effective.
  • There was improvement from 24 hours all the way to the 180 day mark for both laser treatment types.

Wrap Up

Both infrared and red cold laser (LLL) showed to be significantly effective in a double-blind, randomized parallel clinical trial for the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) (TMD).

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

We have seen time and time again the amazing effectiveness of chiropractic for issues such as neck out of alignment, hips out of alignment, back alignment, lower back alignment hip out of alignment, back out of alignment, etc… We have just about seen it all.

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!!   We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
