RESEARCH: Does Spinal Manipulation Really Work on Low Back Pain?

low back pain

“But my dad’s old doctor told him that chiropractors don’t work. He said they will just hurt you. He said Oooooh….you better be careful going to chiropractors.”

It’s comments like that that are what chiropractors around the nation hear every single day. It’s comments like that that make this sort of Research, Evidence-based blog necessary. People hold those old medical doctors up in regards to respect and esteem. And, let’s be honest, most of them have earned that over their life span taking care of a community for many many years.

You can imagine how hard it is to make people understand that, when you tell them that research shows that medical doctor was speaking out of ignorance, they don’t always necessarily believe me.

They don’t have to believe me. But, they do need to believe the people that do the research. In most cases, it’s medical doctors, Phd’s, governments, and insurance companies. It’s not chiropractors telling people how good they are.

It’s another reason I would encourage you to go ahead and share these blogs with your friends. OK, here’s this week’s research abstract.

Why Did They Do It?
Low back pain is so costly and so prevalent, they know some answers need to be found. Four out of five adults experience and deal with back pain. They wanted to determine long-term outcomes of low back pain treatment. They wanted to evaluate factors dealing with prognosis. They also wanted to contrast and compare medical treatment vs. chiropractic treatment in back and leg pain patients.

How Did They Do It?

  • 832 chiropractors
  • 111 medical doctors
  • Measured pain, disability, and satisfaction at 6 and at 12 months
  • They used the Visual Analog Scale and the Revised Oswestry Disability Questionnaire to determine progress or lack thereof.

What Did They Find?

  • LONG-term pain and disability were about the same in chiropractic and medical patients BUT there were significant differences. That’s just the cover of the book. It’s not the meat and potatoes.
  • Chiropractic showed superior results when compared to traditional medical care for those with pain radiating below the knee associated with low back pain.
  • Chiropractic patients were more satisfied with all parts of their care than were the medical patients.

Wrap Up
Chiropractic wins in low back pain and pain radiating below the knee.
Patients love their chiropractors more than they love their medical doctor. 🙂

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic . Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!! We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
