Research – Hospital-Based Study Says Chiropractic May Be A Better Answer In Low Back Pain

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

As I was strolling through a chiropractic Facebook group yesterday, I noticed a post about some research that came out in 2008 from Canada. It was talking about a program they put together in the hospitals in which patients were co-managed by medical doctors and chiropractors. It was written by Paul Bishop, MD, DC, PhD.

It was called the chiropractic hospital-based interventions research outcomes study. The argument was that there has been tons of research coming out in favor of chiropractors and spinal manipulative treatments but little has been accomplished toward implementing any new ideas or procedures in order to take advantage of the new knowledge gained from the research.

Basically, the chiropractors still weren’t getting the referrals for the cases even though research has shown time and time again that chiropractic is the treatment of choice for them. There remained a large gap between what medical providers think is effective and what actually is effective according to research studies.

So, C.H.I.R.O. was set up as the “gold-standard, research-methodology clinical trials designed to evaluate the chiropractic assessment and treatment of patients with acute or chronic cervical, thoracic, or lumbosacral spine pain stratified by underlying spine pathology.” This was to be in a hospital-based setting at Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Spine Program at Canada’s National Spine Institute, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

The study was a randomized clinical trial and compared traditional medical care with “study care.” The Study Care group included lumbar adjustments administered by chiropractors.

There was significantly better functional improvements and quality of life outcomes than traditional medical care.

Just another reason to call your local chiropractor and make an appointment.

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic . Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!
