RESEARCH: How Effective is Chiropractic For Whiplash Injuries?

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014
We have truly seen a lot of personal injury patients in our practice.

Experience and knowledge is something that is of utmost importance in these cases. In my case, I have Advanced Certification in Whiplash Traumatology and Biomechanics through the Spine Research Institute of San Diego with Dr. Art Croft. This course, in my opinion, is irreplaceable in the treatment and management of personal injury cases. As well, I have completed the Personal Injury Institute’s program in Dallas. Not to mention the Kennedy program on disc classifications, I’m currently going through the CRISP low back disorder protocol, and a whole bunch of others!

I guess my point is:

  1. Patients: Be certain you are going to a practitioner that truly has experience in the treatment of personal injury and has done the work required to be proficient in your case management.
  2. Practitioners: Do the work and get the knowledge you need to do your personal injury patients justice. All it takes to mess up their case or it’s management, is a small amount of ignorance. You must always be at the forefront to do it right.

Now, I have seen some amazing turn-arounds in the world of whiplash. Whiplash symptoms are varied, however, the most common symptoms are neck pain, mid-back pain, headaches, and numbness or pain into the arms. Here’s a research paper on just how effective Chiropractic treatment can be for it.

Why They Did It:

To attempt to determine what type of whiplash patient would be the ones that would respond the best to chiropractic treatment.

How They Did It

  • Took 100 patients with chronic pain due to whiplash.
  • Seven fell out of the study
  • 93 patients made up the final group.
  • 25 were male and 68 were female
  • Patients received an average of 19.3 adjustments throughout roughly 4 months of treatment
  • They were divided into three distinct groups

Group 1: Neck pain radiating into the shoulders, restricted range of neck movement but no neurological issues.
Group 2: Neurological symptoms (pain or numbness into arms) with neck discomfort and decreased range of motion.
Group 3: A mishmash of symptoms such as blackouts, visual disturbances, sleep disturbances, etc. Also having neck pain described as severe but a full range of motion and no neuro signs.

What Did They Find?

Group 1: 72% improved. 24% becoming asymptomatic and 24% improving by two symptom grades.
Group 2. 94% responded positively. 38% became asymptote while 43% improved by 2 symptom grades.
Group 3: 27% of these patients improved. All stayed symptomatic.

Wrap Up:

The authors of the paper concluded that “The results from this study provide further evidence that chiropractic is an effective treatment for chronic whiplash symptoms.”

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.
