Why Did They Do It?

To find out if cold laser could be an effective alternative in treating swelling and pain. Specifically, in this research abstract, following orthognathic surgery. Or, as it is known in the real world: jaw surgery.

How Did They Do It?

  • They took 10 healthy patients that had undergone the surgery in with similar procedures performed.
  • They used cold laser inside the mouth as well as outside the mouth on one side.
  • Application to the other side of the jaw was simulated. It was the placebo side.
  • They then compared the two sides in regards to swelling and pain assessments.

What Did They Find?

  • At the immediate post-op assessment, there was no difference.
  • Swelling decreased significantly on the treatment side on assessments at 3, 7, 15, and 30 days after the surgery.
  • The patients also reported less intense pain on the treatment side at 24 hours and 3 days after surgery.

Wrap Up
Through research, cold laser was shown to be capable of reducing both pain AND swelling following surgery. In regards to pain and swelling, you can only imagine how effective cold laser is for common sprains and strains and other musculoskeletal complaints that chiropractors see every day.

This research abstract was published in Int J Oral Maxilofac Surg. 2014 Jul;43(7):868-73. and authored by Gasperini G, et. al. View it online at PubMed at this link.

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic . Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!
