Research: How Effective is Manipulation & Exercise? An Updated Review

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014
I posted a blog not too long ago having to do with exercise and chiropractic manual therapy. Thanks to Dr. Craig Benton down in Lampasas, TX with Benton Chiropractic, I have another one to share with you all. I encourage you all to continue to read and SHARE these research blogs with your friends and neighbors. It is the ONLY way that chiropractic can finally reach the level of acknowledgment and utilization it deserves.

Why They Did It

There needed to be a “refresher” in the literature for several types of manual therapy in regards to low back pain at different stages of care.

How They Did It

  • The researchers used MEDLINE, Cochrane-Register-of-Controlled-Trials, PEDro, and EMBASE to find papers and abstracts that matched the quality they needed for the review.
  • They used papers from January 2000 to April 2013
  • They used two independent reviewers according to accepted protocols and guidelines
  • They used 360 studies
  • Two stages of low back pain were used: acute-subacute and chronic

What Did They Find?

Acute-subacute Low Back Pain
STRONG evidence in favor of manual therapy compared to fake treatment in the 1-3 month phase.
MODERATE evidence in favor of manual therapy in comparison to traditional medical treatment 1-3 month.
Chronic Low Back Pain
MODERATE evidence in favor of manual therapy and exercise or traditional medical treatment in comparison to exercise alone.
Wrap Up

Chiropractic manual therapy is the treatment of choice in non-specific low back pain in the short-term and in the chronic stages.

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled.  We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!!   We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
