Research: Less Surgery When Going To A Chiropractor First

Wednesday, November 11th, 2015

We have discussed this one before but it’s a doozy and I haven’t talked about it in a about a year. It’s time for a quick refresher on the info!

It’s called “Early predictors of lumbar spine surgery after occupational back injury: results from a prospective study of workers in Washington State.” It was done by B.J. Keeney et. al.

Why Did They Do It?
To see if there were any predictors of whether a person would end up having low back surgery inside of 3 years after their work injury. Back injuries are the most common work injury.

How Did They Do It?

  • They used Disability Risk Identification Study Cohort (D-RISC) data
  • They used baseline worker-reported measures from about 3 weeks after the injury claim was made.
  • They used medical billing data to find out if they ever underwent the surgery inside of 3 years

What Did They Find Out?

  • In the D-RISC sample of 1885 people, 174 of them had surgery within 3 years
  • REDUCED ODDS OF SURGERY were noticed for people that were 35 years or younger, were female, were Hispanic, or whose FIRST PROVIDER WAS A CHIROPRACTOR.
  • Around 42.7% of workers who saw a surgeon first has surgery.
  • Only 1.5% of those seeing a chiropractor first had surgery.

You can find the research abstract at the following link:

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic . Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising your general, overall level of health!

Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think.

And….SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!! We cannot make a difference without your help.

Till next time……
