Research Shows Chiropractic Just As Effective As Nerve Root Injections

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

The purpose of this research was see the comparison between self-reported pain and subsequent improvement in people having symptomatic, MRI-confirmed, lower back disc herneations that were treated with two different methods.

1. Spinal manipulative therapy (Chiropractic)
2. Nerve root injections

Here’s how it went:
102 patients that matched specific criteria were treated with either injections or chiropractic.
They rated their pain on the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before treatment was rendered.
They rated their pain on the NRS one month after treatment while also using the Patient Global Impression of Change scale.

Results:
Improvement was reported at 76.5% in the chiropractic group and 62.7% in the injections group. Both reported significant amounts of improvement on the NRS scale after one month.

Average costs between the two treatments were $558.75 for chiropractic and $729.61 for injections.

Conclusions:
There were no significant differences in the outcomes between Injections and Chiropractic except for the cost and the potential side-effects. When considering direct procedure costs, the average cost of chiropractic was just as effective but less expensive.
