Tested and Proven: Can You Avoid Disc Herniation Surgery?

chiropractic can help with disc herniations

Why They Did It

There was a noted vacuum in the research literature in regards to how a low back disc herniation progresses, regresses, or simply exists through time. There were also no clear protocols or indications for when operations should be performed on low back disc herniations. In addition, there were clear indications in the literature suggesting that the largest of disc herniations showed the most tendency toward resolving. The paper wanted to explore whether the larger herniations are able to be treated through conservative management successfully.

How They Did It

  • MRI imaging and Clinical Assessment were used.
  • Clinical Assessment included the Lasegue test and a neurological exam.
  • 37 patients met the criteria to be included in the study.
  • The assessments and imaging were utilized over a 2-year period.
  • The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) questionnaire was used to assess function.

What They Found

  • The first follow-up appointment averaged 23.2 months out from the beginning of the study.
  • At the first follow-up, 83% of the patients had COMPLETE and SUSTAINED recovery.
  • The ODI went from 58% disability to 15% disability.
  • The MRI imaging showed average reduction of the disc herniation by 64%!

Wrap It Up

“A massive disc herniation can pursue a favorable clinical course. If early progress is shown, the long-term prognosis is very good and even massive disc herniations can be treated conservatively.”

Benson RT, et. al., “Conservatively treated massive prolapsed discs: a 7-year follow-up” Ann R Coll Surg Engl. 2010 Mar; 92(2): 147–153.

Just another reason to call a chiropractor TODAY!

Research and clinical experience shows that, in about 80%-90% of headaches, neck, and back pain, in comparison to the traditional medical model, patients get good or excellent results with Chiropractic. Chiropractic care is safe, more cost-effective, it decreases your chances of having surgery, and it reduces your chances of becoming disabled. We do this conservatively and non-surgically. In addition, we can do it with minimal time requirements and minimal hassle on the part of the patient. And, if the patient develops a “preventative” mindset going forward from initial recovery, we can likely keep it that way while raising the general, overall level of health!
