Why Get Spinal Injections When Chiropractic Is Available?

Monday, January 27th, 2014

Continuing our theme of chiropractic reducing healthcare costs, being non-invasive and conservative, and being equally effective….research in 2013 showed that chiropractic adjustments were equally effective as epidural injections for those suffering from low back pain. And that’s minus the risks and without the significant costs that go along with the injections!

It concluded that conservative chiropractic care can significantly reduce pain seen in herniations of the lower back discs. Of course, it’s less expensive too.

Side effects of steroids being injected into you are:

  • weakening of muscles in the area
  • weakening of the bone in the area
  • disruption fo the body’s natural hormone balance
  • lightening of you wallet

Although the spinal injections are commonly prescribed, there is still a lot of controversy as to it’s effectiveness. Especially when compared to other options that are safer and less invasive.

To my knowledge, there are 4 main treatment options for disc herniations:
1. Injections – they treat the inflammation, not the disc, and are usually short-lived and minimally effective.
2. Physical therapy – does not treat the disc specifically but can help with core strengthening
3. Surgery – certainly an effective option but a study I read recently stated that only about 30% are successful the first time.
4. Chiropractic Care With Spinal Decompression – I’m biased but this is the treatment of choice in a disc herniation in my opinion. It’s safe, conservative, much more cost effective, and is outstandingly effective. Spinal decompression is a “game-changer” for disc conditions.

This new study comes to us from the Journal of Manual and Physiological Therapeutics in where Swiss researchers compared chiro spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) and epidural nerve root injections (NRI). There were 102 patients with symptomatic lumbar herniations that were confirmed via MRI.

Following one month of treatment, the two groups had significant improvement.
Chiropractic patients:

  • 76.5% said they were “much better” or “better”
  • 60% had a significant reduction in pain

Injection patients:

  • 62.7% said they were “much better” or “better”
  • 53% had a significant reduction in pain

None of the chiropractic patients went on the receive surgery while 3 of the injection patients eventually underwent a surgical procedure.

Although chiropractic won, the outcomes were fairly close to the same. The next step was to compare the costs of the treatments. They could only take averages and the averages for one month of each treatment were as follows:
Chiropractic care = $558.00
Injections = $729.00 (this price did not include the associated costs such as clinicians, more than one injection, MRI, etc.)

All of this tells us that patients can get relief through us rather than having to worry about the side effects of injections and steroids and they can do at a much smaller cost!

Can I get you all to TELL SOMEONE YOU LOVE?

Till next time…..
